List of Israeli shopping malls

The following is a list of shopping malls in Israel.
In Israel, use of the word kanyon is a play on the words "kana", which means "to buy", and "henyon", which means "parking space" (due to the large amount of parking spaces near the mall), while at the same time sounding like the English word canyon. With the establishment of this mall, the word kanyon entered the Hebrew language. The word is now used to describe any covered shopping centre and many malls in Israel since then have been named with "kanyon" in their title.  more from Wikipedia

Mamilla Mall

Mamilla Mall, also known as Alrov Mamilla Avenue, is an upscale shopping street and the only open-air mall in Jerusalem, Israel. Located northwest of Jaffa Gate, the mall consists of an 2,000 feet (610 m) pedestrian promenade called Alrov Mamilla Avenue lined by 140 stores, restaurants, and cafes, and office space on upper floors. The mall sits atop a multi-story parking garage for 1,600 cars and buses, and a bus terminal. Designed by Moshe Safdie and developed by Alrov Properties and Lodgings Ltd. of Tel Aviv, the mall incorporates the facades of 19th-century buildings from the original Mamilla Street, as well as the original structures of the Convent of St. Vincent de Paul, the Stern House, and the Clark House.
The mall is part of the Alrov Mamilla Quarter, a $400 million mixed-use development that also includes the 28 acres (11 ha) David's Village luxury condominium project, the David Citadel Hotel, the Alrov Mamilla Hotel, and the Karta parking lot. While the overall project was approved by the municipality in the early 1970s, and most of the condominiums and the David Citadel Hotel were completed in the 1990s, construction of the mall was delayed time and again – first due to opposition by preservationist, environmentalist, and religious groups, and then due to bureaucratic disputes, litigation, and arbitration. The mall was finally completed and opened in stages from 2007 to 2008, thirty-seven years after its initial proposal.  more from Wikipedia

Tourism in the Palestinian territories

Tourism in the Palestinian territories refers to tourism in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. In 2010, 4.6 million people visited the Palestinian territories, compared to 2.6 million in 2009. Of that number, 2.2 million were foreign tourists while 2.7 million were domestic. This number of international visits is misleading, however, since most tourists come for only a few hours or as part of a day trip itinerary. In the last quarter of 2012 over 150,000 guests stayed in West Bank hotels; 40% were European and 9% were from the United States and Canada. Major travel guides write that "the West Bank is not the easiest place in which to travel but the effort is richly rewarded."
The Palestinian Authority and Israeli tourism ministries have attempted to work together on tourism in the Palestinian territories in a Joint Committee. Recent cooperation to share access to foreign tourists has not proven successful in Palestine for many reasons. Israel controls the movement of tourists into the West Bank. Palestinian tour guides or transportation companies have not been able to enter Israel since 2000, and in 2009, Israel's Ministry of Tourism completely wiped the West Bank and any Palestinian area from its materials. Former Palestinian Authority Tourism Minister Kholoud Diibes has commented "that Israel collects 90% of [religious] pilgrim-related revenue". Foreign tourism has been restricted to East Jerusalem and the West Bank since the August 2013 indefinite closing of the Rafah crossing located between Egypt and the Hamas controlled Gaza Strip. There is essentially no tourist flow to Gaza since 2005 because of the ongoing Israeli military land, air, and sea blockade.
In 2013 Palestinian Authority Tourism minister Rula Ma'ay'a stated that her government aims to encourage international visits to Palestine, but the occupation is the main factor preventing the tourism sector from becoming a major income source to Palestinians. There are no visa conditions imposed on foreign nationals other than those imposed by the visa policy of Israel. Access to Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza is completely controlled by the Government of Israel..Entry to the occupied Palestinian territories requires only a valid international passport.  more from Wikipedia

1948 Arab-Israeli War

The 1948 Arab–Israeli War or the First Arab–Israeli War was fought between the State of Israel and a military coalition of Arab states. In Hebrew it is known as The War of Independence (Hebrewמלחמת העצמאות‎, Milkhemet Ha'Atzma'ut) or the War of Liberation (Hebrewמלחמת השחרור‎, Milkhemet HaShikhrur). This war formed the second stage of the1948 Palestine war, known in Arabic as The Nakba or Catastrophe(Arabicالنكبة‎, al-Nakba).
There had been tension and conflict between the Arabs and the Jews, and between each of them and the British forces, ever since the 1917 Balfour Declaration and the 1920 creation of the British Mandate of Palestine. British policies dissatisfied both Arabs and Jews. The Arabs' opposition developed into the 1936–1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, while the Jewish resistance developed into the Jewish insurgency in Palestine (1944–1947). In 1947 these ongoing tensions erupted into civil war, following the 29 November 1947 adoption of the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestinewhich planned to divide Palestine into three areas: an Arab state, a Jewish state and the Special International Regime for the City of Jerusalem.
On 15 May 1948 the ongoing civil war transformed into an inter-state conflict between Israel and the Arab states, following the Israeli Declaration of Independence the previous day. A combined invasion by Egypt, Jordan and Syria, together with expeditionary forces from Iraq, entered Palestine - Jordan having declared privately to Yishuv emissaries on 2 May it would abide by a decision not to attack the Jewish state. The invading forces took control of the Arab areas and immediately attacked Israeli forces and several Jewish settlements. The 10 months of fighting, interrupted by several truce periods, took place mostly on the former territory of the British Mandate and for a short time also in the Sinai Peninsula andsouthern Lebanon.
As a result of the war the State of Israel retained the area that the UN General Assembly Resolution 181 had recommended for the proposed Jewish state as well as almost 60% of the area of Arab state proposed by the 1948 Partition Plan. including the JaffaLydda and Ramle area, Galilee, some parts of the Negev, a wide strip along the Tel-Aviv-Jerusalem road, West Jerusalem, and some territories in the West Bank. Transjordan took control of the remainder of the former British mandate, which it annexed, and the Egyptian military took control of the Gaza Strip. At the Jericho Conference on 1 December 1948, 2,000 Palestinian delegates called for unification of Palestine & Transjordan as a step toward full Arab unity." No state was created for the Palestinian Arabs.
The conflict triggered significant demographic change throughout the Middle East. Around 700,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from the area that became Israel and they became Palestinian refugees. In the three years following the war, about 700,000 Jews immigrated to Israel with many of them having been expelled from their previous countries of residence in the Middle East.

List of shopping malls in Israel

The following is a list of shopping malls in Israel.
In Israel, use of the word kanyon is a play on the words "kana", which means "to buy", and "henyon", which means "parking space" (due to the large amount of parking spaces near the mall), while at the same time sounding like the English word canyon. With the establishment of this mall, the word kanyon entered the Hebrew language. The word is now used to describe any covered shopping centre and many malls in Israel since then have been named with "kanyon" in their title.  more from Wikipedia

According to police, the protesters had stockpiled homemade explosives, firecrackers and wooden boards inside the mosque, with the intention of attacking thousands of Jewish worshipers gathered below for prayers at the Western Wall on Tisha B’Av, a fast and day of mourning that commemorates the destruction of the first and second Jewish Temples. Read on

Israel: Ethiopian Jews Protest In Jerusalem Against Police Brutality
As protests raged throughout the United States, Israel dealt with its own demonstrations on 30 April, after about 1,000 Ethiopian Jews took to the streets of Jerusalem to protest police brutality. The protests, which occurred in front of the national Israel police headquarters, were prompted by a video showing two police officers attacking an Israeli soldier of Ethiopian descent. According to Haaretz, the incident occurred on 26 April in the Tel Aviv suburb of Holon. The video shows a police officer pushing Demas Fekadeh to the ground after Fekadeh does not move at the officer's request. Another officer is then seen hitting the soldier. Read on

What Netanyahu can do to bridge the chasm with his rivals – and with the world
About a month ago, this writer quoted an individual close to Benjamin Netanyahu as saying that the prime minister feared an electoral victory more than a defeat. Not because of the difficulties of coalition building, but for fear of the world. Not a week has passed since Election Day and U.S. President Barack Obama is alluding to the need for a “reassessment” – the diplomatic doomsday weapon – of the Israeli-U.S. relationship, and accused Netanyahu of eroding Israeli democracy. Read on

Telephone numbers in Israel

Until the 1990s, telephone numbers in Israel had 6 digits (except in its early days), and until the 2000s, there were 8 area codes allocated to Bezeq, by region. Currently numbers have seven digits and Bezeq controls 6 area codes - 04 and 06 (Haifa and northern areas) were merged, as well as 07 (south) and 08 (Shfela). Israel's country calling code is +972.
With the influence of VOIP long distance was deregulated in Israel. According to the Israel Ministry of Communication a VOIP number may beported to a landline carrier and vice versa providing the option to have, say, a northern number in the south of the country. Numbers may not be ported, say, from the north to the south of the country on the same kind of line (e.g., VOIP to VOIP or landline to landline). Mobile number portability between cellular providers was introduced in late 2007.
The format for calls to landlines within the same area code is XXX-XXXX. For calls to a landline outside the local area, the area code is prefixed and the format becomes (0Y) XXX-XXXX for calls to landlines, where "0Y" is the area code. The format for calls to mobile and VOIP lines is 0YZ-XXX-XXXX, where "0YZ" is the mobile or VOIP indicator. When calling from outside of Israel, the leading "0" in area codes is not dialed, and the format is +972-Y-XXX-XXXX for calls to landlines, or +972-YZ-XXX-XXXX for calls to mobile and VOIP lines.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assails the Obama administration over nuclear talks with Iran
e scene was as unprecedented as the topic was grave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stood at the rostrum of the House of Representatives, addressing a joint meeting of Congress, directly challenging the president’s top foreign policy goal as unwise and dangerous. “This is a bad deal. It’s a very bad deal. We’re better off without it,” Netanyahu declared Tuesday, denouncing President Obama’s negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. As Republican members of Congress loudly applauded and many Democrats glared in anger, Netanyahu laid out the case for opposition to the still-developing deal, which the United States and five other nations have struggled to hammer out with Tehran since 2013. “The prime minister didn't offer any viable alternatives” to the current negotiations, Obama said in brief remarks to reporters a few hours after the speech... Read on

Israel freezes monthly allowance to Palestinians over ICC approach
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanayhu has decided to freeze a monthly financial transfer to Palestinians in response to their president's approach to the International Criminal Court, Reuters reports. 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict casualties timeline
The Gaza–Israel conflict is a part of the wider Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
Palestinian militant actions escalated in the Gaza Strip following the overwhelming election to government of the Islamic political party Hamasin 2005 and 2006. The conflict escalated with the split of the Palestinian Authority to Fatah government in the West Bank and the Hamas Government in Gaza and the following violent ousting of FatahPalestinian rocket attacks on Israel and the joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gazahave exacerbated the conflict.
Under its 2005 disengagement plan, Israel retained exclusive control over Gaza's airspace and territorial waters, continued to patrol and monitor the external land perimeter of the Gaza Strip, with the exception of its southernmost border (where Egypt retained control of the border and border crossings were supervised by European monitors) and continued to monitor and blockade Gaza's coastline. Israel largely provides for and controls Gaza's water supply, electricity and communications infrastructure. According to Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, Israel remains an occupying power under international law. The United Nationshas stated that under resolutions of both the General Assembly and theSecurity Council it regards Gaza to be part of the "Occupied Palestinian Territories". Meanwhile, the Fatah government in the West Bank, officially recognized as the sole representative of the State of Palestine, refers to the Gaza Strip as part of the Palestinian state and does not recognize the Hamas government, hence avoiding interfering in the conflict.  more from Wikipedia

Jaffa Port
Jaffa Port (Hebrewנמל יפו‎, Nemal Yafo) is an ancient port located in theOld City of Jaffa, now Israel.
Jaffa and its port have a history spanning over three millennia. The port itself is mentioned in various ancient works, including the Hebrew Bible, such as the book of Jonah, and the works of Josephus describing Jewishhistory and the First Jewish Revolt against Rome. For over 7000 years it has been actively used, predating Muslims, Christians, Jews, and even Egyptians. Still functional as a small fishing port, the port is currently a recreational zone featuring restaurants and cafés. A lighthouse, Jaffa Light, is located above the port.
In 1917 during the World War I British troops under General Allenby defeated the Ottomans and took Jaffa, which became part of the British-administered Palestine mandate (1922-1948). In 1947 and 1948 there was sharp fighting between Jaffa, which was largely inhabited by Arabs, and the adjoining Jewish city of Tel Aviv. On the 13th of May 1948 (A day before the proclamation of the State of Israel), the Arab forces in Jaffa were defeated after long fighting with the Zionist underground Haganah andIrgun Zva'i Leumi forces. On 24 April 1950 the Jewish city of Tel Aviv and the Arab city of Jaffa were unified, and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality was established. Today, Arabs of various denominations constitute about 25,000 inhabitants out of a total of 35,000 people. Jaffa has an old fishing harbor, modern boat docks, and a tourism center. Jaffa is a major tourist attraction with an exciting combination of old, new and restored buildings. It offers art galleries, souvenir shops, exclusive restaurants, sidewalk cafes, boardwalks and shopping opportunities. It offers a rich variety of culture, entertainment and food (fish restaurants). The city is noted for its export of the famous Jaffa oranges.
